When you're trying to achieve a big goal or complete a project, what gets in the way?
One of the biggest things that gets in the way of achieving goals is doing too many things unrelated to the goal or project while you're trying to achieve it!
There are too many things that are said "yes" to that aren't even related to the project or the goal. To many things you need to do or attend unrelated to the goal or project will just cause distraction and overwhelm. For this reason, when you're trying to achieve a big goal or finish a big project, you will need to create a NOT DOING list for a short time; maybe not forever, but you will have to say "no, I'm not going to do that", for now.
Maybe you saw in January that people were making posts online on social media all about what they're not doing in the coming year. Things like - not going to skip workouts, not going to be afraid, not going to worry about other people's opinions, not going to scroll on socials without boundaries, and so on...
They're creating those posts because they are in the midst of setting those New Year's resolutions and this is what I'm talking about for projects and goal setting as well. Every 90 days is like another new year where you could use this strategy!
As you're completing goals and projects throughout the year, you also have to create your not doing list alongside the goals list. These are what you're going to say no to, even just for a time being, just for 90 days.
I remember hearing online business coach and guru, Marie Forleo, talk about when she first started her business, which was 25 something years ago, and now she has a multi-million dollar business. She worked full time when she first started creating her coaching business, and she was bartending part-time, while creating her business.
She said there were many happy hours with friends that she had to skip.
There were weekend activities that she had to say no to and trips with friends she said no to because they weren't in alignment with her goal or her project, which was launching her business.
What are you not going to do for the next short period of time while you work on finishing your goal or project?
The to do list for completing a project or achieving a goal is pretty simple to come up with.
What would you put on your not doing list to help you complete the project or achieve the goal?
When you have a big goal, sometimes something has to go temporarily and it doesn't mean it's forever, it just means it's temporary.
I have a few examples to share:
1. I remember when my son was graduating high school. He had to work really hard in high school. We encouraged him to give up video gaming for a short period of time. Just at the end of his senior year, three months, give up gaming a those few months so that he could finish strong.
2. When I was originally launching Limitless Business Online, which was actually early 2022, I chose to let go of holding a monthly donation based yoga classes temporarily because it really didn't fit into the goal of launching the business.
That's another whole story for another time of what happened with yoga and everything, but temporarily I made that choice to let go of that yoga class for a while.
3. And in the last couple of months, when I chose to move my whole online business management system (i.e. CRM, email service provider, website content manager, and actual website) from Kajabi to a new platform called FG Funnels which, by the way, a side note, if you are interested in starting an online business or developing an online business and you're looking for a platform to host everything, I highly recommend FG funnels! I can tell you more...just email me.😉
I'd love to hear from you in the comments below...
As I was saying, in the last few months, I chose to move all my content to a new platform and that takes a good bit of time. So I chose to let go of my weekly lives temporarily. I decided "I'm going to take a little time from that so that I can get everything moved".
What is on your not doing list for the next month or two - a 60 day or 90 day time frame - so that you can complete your project or reach your goal?
Let whatever is not in alignment with your primary goal or focus go, just for now, temporarily.
Some of the things that I am choosing NOT to do right now while I'm launching and growing Limitless Business Online are tangible and some of them are a little more intangible. Here are a few things on my not doing list right now:
Not going to the grocery store
Actually, I haven't gone to the grocery store other than just to pick up 1 or 2 little random items since about 2019.😀 Before Covid I was using Instacart.
I just find that going to the grocery store is not time well spent for me. I can make a meal plan and order groceries in about an hour of time versus 2 to 3 hours planning, going, shopping, and bringing home.
I still make a meal plan. I still make a grocery list. I just make the list on Instacart and let someone else do the shopping. So I don't go to the grocery store. That's not in alignment with my goals right now.
Not saying yes to every social opportunity that comes along
One night my husband was over at some friend's house and he texted me and said, "hey, come down here and hang out with us". I chose to finish the work I had planned.
It's not always easy to say no to the fun things. Sure, it's more fun to go hang out with friends, but I had already planned the work that I was going to do, and I said, "you know what? I can skip this one social night and finish this work".
If we're invited to something social on like a Tuesday or a Thursday night, I'll usually say no because I know I won't be as rested for work the next day. I want to be fresh and ready the next day. I don't want to be tired and have a hard time getting going because I did something social on a Tuesday night or a Wednesday night.
I do go to a Bible study on a Thursday nights and I go to a small group on Wednesday nights, but I'm usually home by 830 or 9. That's not too late.🥱
I will say no to some social things, temporarily, while I'm working on growing this business
Not working every Saturday
Back in 2021 and 2022, I was working every Saturday on my small business. I got really burned out.
I am very goal oriented so it made sense in my mind to just do what you have to do for a time period - just do the work. But now, I'm saying no to working every Saturday, and maybe I'll work two Saturdays a month but that is my boundary.
I want to protect myself from that burnout. I do choose to work, like I said, about two Saturdays a month, just for a few hours in the morning, and I have that boundary in place so that I'm not going to experience burnout.
Not letting fear get in the way.
Doing the live episodes are simple, but not easy. Fear definitely creeps in. It's not an easy one to say no to. But I've chosen I'm not going to let that fear creep stop me.
I'm going to say no to fear. I've chosen to go back to my why and the visualizations that I've been practicing for my goals. I go back to those when the fear starts creeping in so I can remind myself why I'm doing this. That helps me say no to fear.
Not flying by the seat of my pants everyday.
I use Clickup, which is a project management tool, so I can record tasks and ideas as they come to me. I get them out of my head and into a storage place. That way I can stay organized and not feel I need to post on social, but I don't know what to post... I don't have to go by the seat of my pants. I can have a plan and stay organized.
I also use my on purpose planner to stay focused, to stay grounded, and on track toward the goal that I have set for this year and for limitless business online.
{By the way, when you preorder, you will receive four bonuses for pre-ordering the on purpose planner. SEE the Planner page to see all the bonuses. They will ship at the end of June, so you have it ready and available for your next quarter of 2024.}
You have to figure out the goal or the project ~ where am I headed.
And why are you headed there - completing it?
Finally - one extra caveat - what is the time frame for your goal? What is the time frame to complete your project?
When you know that time frame, saying no, not now, is easy because you know it's not forever. It's just temporary.
What's the goal?
Why are you completing it?
What's the time frame?
This entire process of figuring out what you're not doing is accomplished by having quarterly objectives and key results in place, and that is what the On Purpose Planner helps you figure out. It walks you through setting quarterly objectives, which are goals, and then your key results are how you're going to get there. That way it's a little bit easier to say NO to some things temporarily.
I challenge you to think about what is on your not doing list for now so that you can reach your goal or complete your project.
